Portia Jordan is an associate professor in the Department of Nursing Science NMMU. She obtained her PhD: nursing at NMMU in 2011, focusing on the development of clinical practice guidelines for the mechanically ventilated patient in critical care units. Furthermore, she is a graduate of the business school, NMMU where she obtained her MBA in 2015. Other qualifications include – M Cur (cum laude – Critical care nursing); BCur, Diploma in Nephrology Nursing and Diploma in Nursing Education. Portia has made a contribution to the body of research in critical care nursing, as she successfully completed the PLUME research fellowship (spearheaded by FUNDISA) and is a NRF grant holder, currently in the 3rd year of a research programme that addresses research issues related to the critically ill patient and clinical practice guidelines implementation. Some of the research work has been translated to the critical care units in Malawi. She teaches in the Critical care nursing programme and her expertise is recognised nationally and internationally as she is moderator for critical care nursing at college and university level. She was involved in the critical care nursing programme in India, where a cohort of 40 nurses successfully graduated. She is the reviewer for various national and international journals, as well as a STTI grant reviewer.
