Criteria for Fellowship:
- Registered as a Professional Nurse or Midwife according to the Nursing Act, No. 33 of 2005; and
- Made an extra-ordinary contribution to the field of health care in South Africa, evidenced by outcomes and impact in individuals, systems, policies and/or organizations; and
- Evidence of leadership, innovation and scholarship; and
- Potential contribution of the person to the activities of the Academy.
Any person can nominate any South African nurse for membership if supported by at least two (2) existing Fellows.
Categories of Membership:
Regular Fellow
- A South African registered as a Professional Nurse or Midwife according to the Nursing Act, No. 33 of 2005; and
- Made an extra-ordinary contribution to the field of nursing and health care in South Africa, evidenced by outcomes and impact on individuals, systems, policies and/or organizations; evidence of leadership, innovation and scholarship; potential contribution of the person to the activities of the Academy and has been accepted as a fellow of ANSA

Emeritus Fellow
- Fellows who have reached the age of 65 years or
- Retired from full-time employment; and have
- Submitted written notice to the Board that they elect Emeritus status (if not they continue as regular fellows)

Honorary Fellows
- Persons outside of the nursing profession who in the opinion of the Board have made an extraordinary contribution to Nursing.

Nursing Legends
- Nurses who have made an extraordinary contribution or have achieved an extraordinary accolade within the field of nursing in South Africa. This award can be made during the nurses` lifetime or posthumously.

Membership Fees
The fee structure is as follows:
- Review/nomination fee: R200 (payable with nomination)
- Induction fee: R300 (payable before induction)
- Annual membership: R500 (payable in the year following induction)
