Professor Emmerentia du Plessis pioneers research on caring presence in the South African context. The purpose is to generate knowledge to be used to re-ignite a caring ethos in nursing as researchers in this field. Her contribution to excellence in healthcare is evident from collaborating on leadership level with non-governmental organisations in improving pastoral care and social services to mental health care users. She is innovative in initiating and rendering a unique counselling service in the community, and contributes to quality in psychiatric nursing care through an ongoing psychiatric nursing skills training programme to the nursing staff of a psychiatric hospital, including nursing management, professional nurses, enrolled nurses and auxiliary nurses.
